Chapter 13: Audition

“How come you guys don’t believe in God?” asked Drew, growling in anger. PN stood mute in answer. Then they both took a bow, and I whistled, clapping wildly.

“Okay, thank you,” called Mr. Taylor. “I like the energy.” They had spent the last minute on stage portraying the condensed events of Hell in the Pacific, an intense movie about an American and Japanese soldier who get stranded together on a deserted island during the middle of WWII and have to stop fighting long enough to help each other escape. It stars Lee Marvin, who is Drew’s favorite old actor, and Toshiro Mifune, who plays bad-ass samurais in a ton of movies. Mr. Taylor continued, “And your song selection? Maybe something a little less obscure this time?”

Drew stepped forward and belted, “Party rock is the hoooo-use toooo-night! Everybody’s gonna…” From my seat in the audience it didn’t sound too bad.

“Great, thank you. Next!”

Lionel and Drew exited the stage and sat next to me as a girl with chunky braces came on and acted out a scene from Twilight.

“How’d I do?” asked Drew.

“Pretty good, I think. Taylor gives everyone the same reaction, so it’s hard to tell.” This was the second day of open auditions I’d sat through for our spring musical, The Sound of Music. Some of the acts had been pretty good, most of them terrible (you would not believe how easy it is to mangle Journey songs), but Mr. Taylor had sounded positive and impressed by each one. On the one hand, I could see there was no reason to cut these kids down, but on the other hand – half of these smiling faces were going to be crying their eyes out when they posted the cast list tomorrow, anyway, so why get their hopes up?

Braces the Teen Vampire trundled offstage and on came a young guy who acted out a scene from the comedy Mean Girls, playing four characters at a time. I rubbed my bleary eyes and adjusted my butt in the hard seat. I wasn’t into musicals and normally you couldn’t have paid me to be there, but I was here for more than just supporting Drew.

“And I ain’t no holla back girl, I ain’t…”

Mean Girl Guy got thanked off the stage, and a brunette with stunning green eyes walked up. Her hair was pulled back in a ponytail that bounced up and down on her black blouse. I felt myself watching her every movement; it wasn’t that she was beautiful. I mean, she was definitely beautiful, but.... I can’t explain it. It’s like when Drew was doing a magic trick, he just moved his arms in a certain way that forced you to pay attention. Only she did the same thing with her arched eyebrows, and the way she leaned her body.

Mr. Taylor looked up at her and smiled. “Alright, Portia. What do you have for us today?”

I nudged the boys. This was the girl, the one The Saint had told us to get in contact with – Portia Wentworth, high school junior, drama star and slut.
